LILA
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Volunteers may become involved in any one of LILA’s programs, and / or may qualify to serve as a LILA board member. LILA PROGRAMS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Accessibility Project Volunteers will be going out to local businesses to see if they are accessible to people with mobility and sensory disabilities. After attending a survey training, each volunteer will be given a survey form to complete for each business, which takes about 30 minutes. Surveys can be done at any time that is convenient for the volunteer, and there is no limit on how many each person may choose to complete. For information regarding the next survey training, please call the LILA office. Voter’s Access Project Volunteers hold the Voter Access Project together through education and outreach. Anyone interested in registering people to vote and explaining how voting works should join up. Also, volunteers are needed to research accessible voting, including phone and home computer voting. Volunteers are needed for set-up and other assistance at the Project's planning events - the first of which is in September. Planning for this event is already underway, and anyone wanting to be a part of this leading-edge project should connect with the LILA right away! Assistive Technology ATP needs one or two volunteers with computer experience and familiarity with adaptive technology for disabled users. These volunteers would work in conjunction with the board committee on technology and would be available to advise, install and maintain the assistive hard and software systems.
Arts and Recreation Program Volunteers will be working with the Board Recreation Committee to assist in the decision making and logistical process of pulling together regular community outings for the LILA membership. If you have any great ideas about what activities the LILA recreation program should ad to its bulletin board, please send us an email or give us a call with your suggestions. Come one, come all, potential volunteers! BOARD MEMBER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Although an independent living center (ILC /CIL) is required under Federal law to have at least 51% of the members on its Board of Directors be people with disabilities, that does not preclude others from serving on the board or being involved in other ways. We encourage people to help and learn about LILA, ILC/CIL’s, disability issues, organizations and the abilities of people usually ignored due to their disability. Once an individual has demonstrated that they are committed to LILA’s mission, and that they truly care about helping people to help themselves, they may be eligible to serve as a Board member. To find out more about this process, please direct your questions to the Secretary of Board.
